Darien is a community recognized for its excellent schools, active churches representing seven denominations, social clubs, civic organizations and a variety of philanthropic activities. Located along the Long Island Sound in Coastal Fairfield County, Darien is an extremely affluent community, its history as rich as many of its country club residents. Originally settled in 1641 as part of Stamford, the area became Middlesex Parish in 1737. In 1820, residents petitioned the state legislature to establish Darien as a separate town. Today the city covers 12.9 square miles with an estimated 20,000 residents. Prices for single-family homes start in the low $600,000s for older model houses located inland. More than 50% of Darien homes for sale are $800,000 or above. The top of the real estate market features $10 million estate homes with ocean or river views and acreage. There is a small supply of condominiums, all located near the ocean. Prices start at $600,000 for a one-bed, one-bath condominium.
